Direct Hit! [SS Opinions #3]

A few days ago, Nintendo released a new Nintendo Direct video announcing a bunch of surprises for the holidays and early 2014.  Some were a bit intriguing, but a few captured my attention more than others.  I have to say the biggest surprise, hands down, was the Legend of Zelda-Dynasty Warriors crossover title Hyrule Warriors, which looks like a great game that should prove to be a popular one.  But my favorite announcement was the introduction video for Rosalina in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / 3DS.

Now, at first I thought this was a Kirby Air Ride 2 announcement trailer because of the music choice at the beginning (which would be totally awesome, by the way), but when I saw Rainbow Road and Mario and Co. racing around, I then thought “Wait. Is Kirby going to be in Mario Kart 8!?” And then, when Donkey Kong poked Kirby’s face, I knew it has to be a Smash Bros. video, because that kind of humor wouldn’t be in a Mario Kart video.

Anyways, I think Rosalina is a great addition to the roster.  Nintendo has needed more female characters in Smash Bros., and now we’ll have at least 5 in the next one (because we all know Zelda will get announced sooner or later).  Plus, Rosalina isn’t just a clone of Peach, because her design is much different.  Her wand allows her to have attack options, and the Luma partner she brings with her can bring about some 1-person combos, which should be fun to play around with.  All in all, between Hyrule Warriors, Rosalina in Smash Bros., Chibi-Robo Photo Finder, and Nintendo-themed Sonic Lost World DLC, we’ve received a great holiday gift from Nintendo this year.  I’m excited to see what’s in store for us in 2014.
